In 1978, National Professor Brig. (Rtd.) Abdul Malik founded the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh (NHFB), a pivotal non-governmental organization endorsed by the Government, actively engaged in cardiovascular health. Professor Malik guided its projects, including the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute. NHFB is a non-profit organization working for prevention of non-communicable diseases in Bangladesh. Besides the clinical services NHFB provide support to the government to control and prevent NCDs. NHFB is diligently working and providing support to NCDC of DGHS for NCD control and prevention at both national and sub-national level. Moreover, NHFB extended and carried out its capability to the international arena.

‘Bangladesh Network for NCD Control and Prevention-BNNCP’ is a network of physicians and civil society members. It has been formed by several health professional and civil society organizations with a view to working collectively in a coordinated way to fight against non-communicable diseases. Bangladesh Orthopaedic Society- BOS and National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh-NHFB are the member organizations of BNNCP while NHFB is the secretariat of BNNCP. BOS, an Association of Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeons in Bangladesh actively working for raising professional capacity of its members for treatment as well as upholding interests of victims of crashes regarding rehabilitation of patients and prevention of injury by raising awareness. NHFB, in partnership with BOS, will collaborate with orthopedists, networks of NCD physicians, and representatives of road crash victims to advocate comprehensive road safety legislation aligned with the Safe System Approach and international best practices.

To support its advocacy goals, the program undertakes the following actions:

Evidence generation through research to inform policy and legislative development. Empowering survivors and families of road crash victims to amplify their voices and build public demand for road safety reforms. Development of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials targeting key road user groups (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, drivers, law enforcement officials, and media personnel) to raise awareness and promote safe practices.

The overarching aim of the program is to facilitate the development of comprehensive road safety legislation that ensures the safety of all road users and significantly reduces the human and economic toll of road traffic crashes in Bangladesh.
